Note 1: Names are recorded the way they are struck,  i.e. capital or lower-case letters,
space or not space between Hong and Kong and fonts as similar as possible.
However, if a name is preceded by (**), it means that the authors have not seen the marking
and only the name has been recorded, regardless of the exact way it appears.
Note 2: An S in the first column (S) indicates that a scan of this marking is displayed on the website.
A small number in the column (N) indicates an embedded note in regard to the corresponding name.
Note 3: The column (Known) indicates that the marking is known on cover (C), on document (D),
on postcard (PC), on postal stationery card (PS), on piece (P), or on wrapper (WR)..
Note 4: In addition to their primary function of being a "Security Marking", full name firm's markings struck on postage stamps
or on postal stationery could have been used for one or several purposes at the same time, such as:
- Cancel late mail
- Forwarding
- Return address
- Fiscal matters
For completeness, we have attempted to record all the firm's names with an indication of their specific function when possible.
When a security marking has been found used for fiscal purposes also, it is highlighted in blue.
When it is conclusive that a marking was used for fiscal reason only, it is listed for reference and highlighted in red.

In 1878, the Post Master General’s Postal Guide contained a notification: “Box holders may mark stamps. Box holders (but box holders only) are at liberty to mark their postage stamps on the back or face, or by perforation, so as to prevent their being stolen. The boycott of American flour by the Chinese in 1905-06 gave a big fillip to the trade of Australian flour, and prominent amongst the firms to benefit by this were Messrs. Barretto & Co., whose business was established, in 1895, by Messrs. A.A.H. Botelho and F.D. Barretto.  The headquarters are in Queen's Building, and as merchants, commission and shipping agents, and wholesale importers and exporters their operations cover an extensive field and are increasing year by year.  Probably more flour from the Australian Commonwealth has passed through thier hands latterly than through those of any other firm in the Colony. They are well represented all over the world, and are the agents in South China and Hong Kong for the Compagnie Francais des Indies et de l'Extreme-Orient; Campania Trasatlantica Royal Spanish Mail Line ( passengers' department); the Gresham Life Assurance Company; Lloyd Platino (Fire and Marine); Victoria General Insurance Company; La Nacional (Marine Insurance); and the Wine Growers' Supply Company.  They have recently started the Imperial Brewing Company, Ltd., in the Colony, and have succeeded in placing the French service of night steamers to Canton on a paying basis.

In our listing description, there is a remark that says the marking probably belongs to the firm of Crus, Basto & Co. The names suggest a Portugese trading company.
 
In the publication: 20th Century Impressions of Hong Kong,  published in 1908, the book had described the firm as:
 
"M. A. M. da Cruz and Mr. J. M. F. Basto, who were joined later by Mr. A. D. Barretto, founded Cruz, Basto & Co. in 1904. All three partners were men of experience in the Colony, and were not long in working up an extensive connection as importers and exporters and especially as flour merchants. At the present time they are one of the largest importers in the Colony of Australian flour, which has become an important item in the local market during the past few years. Australian butter and dairy products are imported, the firm being in touch with some of the leading distributing houses in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The firm deals also in American flour and general merchandise. A branch of the business is situated in Canton, where Chinese silks are bought direct from the weavers, together with matting and other products of South China. Merrs. Cruz, Basto & Co., are one of the leading dealers in the camphor trade of the Colony, bringing the produce from the Fokien Province, and disposing of large quantities locally, besides shipping it in bulk to India. The head offices are in Prince’s Buildings, Hongkong."

The connection between the port of Hong Kong and the Canadian Pacic Railway is with shipping. This is the notes that I have on this firm:
 
"Canadian Pacific Railway began as a private tender to build a railroad line connecting eastern Canada to the Pacific. Formed by a group of businessmen, the company was formally established in May 1881 as the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, and four years later it completed construction of the first transcontinental railway in Canada. Over the succeeding decades, the company expanded into a number of other industries, including hotels, steamships, oil and gas, mining, airlines, telecommunications, and shipping services. The completion of the line had many effects on both the company and the Canadian economy. The rail connection from the more industrialized eastern regions to the Pacific Coast enabled the company to expand into the export shipping business and opened up many opportunities in the Far East. Trans-pacific shipping began as early as 1886 when the company chartered seven ships to carry tea and silk from Asia to the West Coast of Canada, thereby providing eastbound freight for the railway. This marked the beginning of CPR's steamship services, later known as CP Ships. CP Ships became renowned in the early decades of the 20th century for its luxury passenger liners--the famous Canadian Pacific Empress class ships. The speed and reliability of the CP Ships fleet led to lucrative mail contracts on both trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic routes. In 1922 CP Ships entered the cruise market business."

I have been trying to find information on the company's history but there does not seem to be much around. Searches using the name "Davidson & Co" had not produced results. Recently, I came across a mention that a Glasgow based company, the Scottish Oriental Steam Ship Co. Ltd., had listed "Ferguson, Davidson & Co as managers" for that firm. For more information do a search on the ship "Phra Nang"  and with the Lloyds Register of British & Foreign Shipping.
 
I am now thinking that Davidson & Co. might have been an agent in Hong Kong for the Scottish Oriental Steam Ship Co. and that their business was related to the Far East coastal service, perhaps through the buying and selling of steam vessels for the then growing coastal navigation business. The period of business activity matches that of the QV adhesives known with this marking.

On 1 May 1891, Dodwell and Arthur John Hepburn Carlill, the manager of the tea department, acquired the now bankrupt Adamson Bell & Co. and renamed it Dodwell, Carlill & Co. SMITH, Carl Thurman., A Sense of History: Studies in the Social and Urban History of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Educational Publishing Co., 1995, made the following mention:
                       

"The Italian firm of D. Musso & Co traded in Hong Kong during the period 1877 – 1879. Its founder was Dominico Musso , who also acted as the Italian Consul in Hong Kong. The business and warehouse were at Navy Bay. Dominico Muso was also involved with the establishment of Roman Catholic Insitutions at Sai Ying Pun."

I refer to Peter's comments on the II-38, with the set of initials comprsing - E. S. K & Co. - that the firm's identity might be the Ellis S. Kardoorie & Co.
 
I think the connection might be right. This marking is found on the KEVII issues in the early 1900s and used in Hong Kong. This matches the timing when Elly (later Sir Elly) S Kardoorie, a Baghdadi Jew, started his own business in Hong Kong around the 1890. He had arrived in the Colony sometime during the 1880 and initially worked for the Sassoon family.
 
What is uncertain to me is the exact name for the firm. Is it Ellis S. Kardoorie & Co. or is it Elly S. Kardoorie & Co.? Or had both versions of the names been used, perhaps one to designate business operations in Hong Kong and the other in Shanghai? This clarification might need some further researching.

In researching the development of the Wan Chai area in Hong Kong Island, I came across the firm's name of George Fenwick & Co., engineers and shipbuilders, which gave its name to Fenwick Street on the Praya East Reclamation. I am of the view that the security marking with the initials " G. F. & Co." belongs to this firm.

This is probably Geo. R. Stevens & Co. See p. 85 Traders of Hong Kong: Some Foreign Merchant Houses,  1841 - 1899, Bard S..  Also listed in Chronicle  & Directory for Hong Kong and the Treaty Ports 1889/1891/1892/1893.
Their business seems to have continued from 1889  up to about 1900.

The International Banking Corporation was an Anglo-American bank that initially dealt with foreign securities in the United States. The International Banking Corporation established an office in Shanghai in May 1902 as well as branches in Manila, Yokohama, Singapore, Hong Kong and Calcutta. In 1918, the bank was bought by the National City Bank of New York, and continues today as the Citibank.

The firm of Lamke and Rogge was formed in 1890 as shipbrokers. They were a German firm and the principles were listed as Johannes Lamke and Carl Heinnich Rogge. Mr. Lamke had been an assistant in Blackhead & Co. and then with Arnhold, Karberg & Co. In 1889, he had his own shipbrokering office until he and Mr. Rogge became partners. Mr. Rogge began his business career in Hong Kong with Melchers & Co. In 1914, Lamke and Rogge was listed as ship, freight and coal brokers.

Could it be be Walter Nutter of London?
  They opened a branch at Shanghai in 1881 operating until at least 1907.  However the examples I have all hve c.d.s of  Hong Kong.  This would mean that a branch was opened here after 1907.  With British firms this is a distinct possibilty.
